My name is Dr Kato, and when I look back at my education journey, I sometimes find it difficult to believe how much my life changed. There was a time when I was among the students who performed worst in class. In some examinations, I would find myself at the bottom of the list, and I started believing that perhaps I was not capable of achieving much academically.
When I joined medical school, I knew that I had chosen a demanding course. Medicine required long hours of studying, concentration and determination. However, despite my efforts, my early academic performance was disappointing.
I would attend lectures and try to understand what the lecturers were teaching, but when examinations came, my marks were often much lower than I expected. Seeing other students perform better than me affected my confidence.
There were times when I would sit in class and wonder whether I had made the wrong choice. I watched some of my classmates answer questions confidently while I struggled to keep up.
My poor performance also became a source of embarrassment. I did not like seeing my name near the bottom of examination results, especially when I knew how much I wanted to become a doctor.
At one point, I started thinking that perhaps I would simply graduate with an ordinary degree after struggling through medical school. I had almost accepted that being among the best students was not meant for me.
But something eventually changed in the way I looked at my education and my future.
I decided that I could not continue studying in exactly the same way and expect different results. I became more serious about identifying the areas where I was struggling and improving my study habits.
I also started seeking guidance from people who had performed well academically. Instead of being ashamed of my weaknesses, I began asking questions and looking for ways to understand difficult subjects better.
During this period, I was also introduced to Magongo Doctors. I explained my academic struggles, my poor examination results and my fear of failing to achieve my dream of becoming a successful doctor.
After listening to my situation, Magongo Doctors cast what they described as an academic success and breakthrough spell, which they said was intended to support my desire for progress and success in my studies.
I continued studying seriously. I changed my routine, became more disciplined and spent more time revising topics that I previously found difficult.
Gradually, I started noticing a difference in my performance. My marks began improving, and subjects that once seemed impossible became easier for me to understand.
The first time I saw a significant improvement in my results, I was extremely happy. It gave me confidence that I could actually change my academic journey.
From there, I became even more determined. I stopped comparing myself negatively with other students and focused on improving my own performance.
Semester after semester, my results continued getting better. The student who had once found himself near the bottom of the class was now competing with some of the strongest students.
Eventually, I reached the final stage of my medical education. By then, I had developed a completely different attitude toward studying, examinations and challenges.
When my final results were released, I was overwhelmed with emotion. I had graduated with a First Class degree in Medicine.
I could hardly believe it. I remembered the days when I was last in class and wondered whether I would ever achieve my academic dreams. Looking at my final results felt like seeing the complete transformation of my journey.
My experience taught me that a poor beginning does not necessarily determine how someone’s story will end. I had once been defined by my poor academic performance, but I eventually discovered that I could improve through determination, discipline, better study habits and seeking guidance.
Today, as Senior Dr Kato, I look back at my journey with gratitude. My academic transformation gave me confidence and reminded me never to give up on a dream simply because the beginning is difficult.
