A Kenyan family says it was forced to leave its newly built home after a frightening swarm of bees appeared around the property, following a dispute over a Ksh 550,000 debt.
According to Dennis Mutwiri from Meru, the trouble began after he borrowed Ksh 550,000 from a friend in 2025 to help complete the construction of his house. He says delays in repaying the money eventually strained their friendship.
Mutwiri claims that during a recent confrontation, his friend demanded repayment and gave him two months to settle the debt, warning that failure to do so would have consequences.
“I thought it was a joke when he told me, ‘Mutwiri unanichezea na ni heri urafiki ifike kikomo juu ya pesa yangu,’” Mutwiri said.
He further alleges that his friend threatened to use various means to ensure he would not have peace and mentioned seeking assistance from a traditional healer.
“Aliniambia atatumia njia zote, hata kama ni kutumia daktari wa kienyeji, na ati alikuwa ashapata namba ya Dr Magongo,” he claimed.
Mutwiri said he initially dismissed the statements as words spoken during an argument.
“Sikujua rafiki amefika mwisho. Nilidhani ni maneno tu ya hasira, kumbe mambo yalikuwa yamekuwa makubwa,” he explained.
According to Mutwiri, the situation became frightening when bees began surrounding their home.
“When I saw bees attack our home, that is when I realised how serious it was. Ukienda kitandani unazipata, bathroom zipo, kila sehemu zilikuwa na nyuki. I had to pick up my family and leave the home we had built and rent somewhere else,” he said.
Following the incident, Mutwiri says he decided to seek a solution by raising part of the money owed and apologising to his friend. He claims that his apology was accepted and that the bees disappeared shortly afterward.
Mutwiri says the two parties also agreed on a repayment plan for the remaining balance, which he hopes to clear before the end of the year.
