The 2027 presidential race is beginning to take shape after a fresh proposal emerged suggesting a political partnership between Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The proposal, which has attracted attention in opposition political circles, suggests that Sifuna could lead a presidential ticket with Gachagua serving as his running mate in a possible challenge to President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Malalah explains why he wants Sifuna at the top

According to Malalah, the proposed arrangement would bring together youthful leadership and the experience of an established politician, creating what he described as an “Obama-Biden moment”.

He argued that Kenya needed fresh leadership but should not overlook experienced politicians who could provide guidance and help steer the country.

Malalah maintained that Sifuna represented a generational shift, insisting that younger leaders should be given an opportunity to take up the country’s top leadership positions.

He questioned why the same political figures who have dominated Kenya’s leadership since the era of former President Daniel arap Moi should continue determining the country’s political future.

Gachagua previously expressed willingness to deputise Sifuna

Interestingly, Malalah’s proposal comes against the backdrop of earlier remarks by Gachagua, who publicly indicated that he would be willing to serve as Sifuna’s deputy if opposition leaders agreed on such an arrangement.

In September 2026, Gachagua said he had no problem deputising Sifuna, despite maintaining that he was also capable of contesting the presidency.

He argued that opposition leaders should be willing to make sacrifices and rally behind one candidate rather than divide their support.

Malalah names other possible running mates

Gachagua is not the only politician Malalah believes could occupy the running mate position.

He also mentioned Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa and People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua as possible candidates for the deputy presidency.

Malalah insisted that the opposition must eventually agree on one presidential candidate to avoid splitting its support in the 2027 contest.

However, he clarified that his proposal was his personal opinion and did not represent the official position of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

What happens next?

The proposal adds another dimension to the ongoing discussions over opposition leadership, possible alliances and the search for a presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

Whether Sifuna, Gachagua and the other opposition leaders will eventually agree on such an arrangement remains to be seen.

For now, Malalah’s proposal has placed Sifuna-Gachagua’s possible partnership back into the national political conversation.

Important clarification: Gachagua has previously expressed willingness to deputise Sifuna, but Malalah’s latest remarks remain a political proposal, not an officially announced opposition ticket.
